Tony has earned master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska (journalism) and UCLA (screenwriting) and won honors for his work as a sportswriter, investigative journalist and screenwriter, including a prestigious Samuel Goldwyn Writing Award.
He also has excelled as an educator throughout his writing career. Consider:
- He helped turn Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart’s struggling newspaper into an award- winning read as the publication’s advisor.
- Drake University named him the first recipient of its Minority Journalism Fellowship, intended to help create diversity in the classroom and the newsroom.
- He developed his first screenwriting seminar for middle school students while working for Extreme Learning’s academic enrichment program at Eliot Middle School (Altadena, CA).
- “Fade to Black” screenwriting seminar for students in the seventh grade and above
was conducted over a 14-week period in the fall of 2008 with outstanding results.

A dedicated and experienced educator and tutor with an award-winning pedigree, Tony Moton became immersed in writing and the power of knowledge at an early age. Tony started working as a math tutor when he was 15 and had his first story published in a daily newspaper at the age of 17 in his native Chicago. Since then, he has become a respected journalist and screenwriter who shares his wisdom with students in a variety of scholastic arenas.
Tony has been an educator on the high school and college levels in traditional settings. He has served as an academic writing coach at middle, junior and senior high schools. His work includes private and public service as a lecturer in creative writing, English, screenwriting,
